Grand Blanc's Own Auto Repair, Grand Pointe
Your vehicle's electrical system may be one of the most complex
The vehicle electrical system has many parts and can be thought of as two segments the first of which includes:
- Headlights
- Fog lights
- Parking lights
- Turn Signals
- Fuses
- Instrument lighting
- Interior lights
- Stop lights
- Backup lights
Some of the things to be aware of in this system are dimming lights and rapid blinking signals. If you experience a rapid blinking turn signal, it usually means there is a fuse in the system blown or maybe a light burnt out somewhere.
The lights on your vehicle are all there for your safety as well as the safety of other drivers. If you have found that there is an issue or a repair needed and you can't fix it please don't hesitate to bring it to us and get it back in proper working order as soon as you can.
The second segment of the automobile's electrical system includes:
- Battery
- Starter
- Ignition coil
- Ignition module
- Spark plugs
- Spark plug wires
- Alternator
- Belts
This section of the electrical system involves more of the starting, running, and charging of your vehicle.
Your vehicle battery stores energy to turn your starter when you start your vehicle. From there the alternator produces electricity to recharge the battery from the start and to run all of the electrical components. The ignition module turns the low-voltage supply to the ignition coil on and off, and the coil produces the high voltage for the ignition system. This creates the spark at the spark plugs and ignites the fuel in the engine. That ignition then drives the belt that keeps the alternator turning and producing electricity for this cycle to continue.
One highly useful tip for vehicle owners is to pay attention to any dimming or flickering lights. This can be an early sign of electrical issues, such as a weak battery or a failing alternator12. If you notice your headlights or interior lights dimming or flickering, it's a good idea to have your vehicle's electrical system checked by a professional to prevent more serious problems down the road. We are the professionals and we'd be happy to help.
If you think you could be experiencing something going wrong with your electrical system, bring it in we'll diagnose it and get your auto repaired as soon as possible.
What is the Coolant System?
The coolant system in your vehicle consists of the radiator, hoses, a heater core, water pump, cooling fan, a thermostat, coolant reservoir, and engine coolant fluid or more commonly known as antifreeze.
The engine cooling system affects your vehicles overall dependability and engine longevity. If you suspect a problem with your cooling system, you should have it checked immediately.
What does the coolant system do?
The coolant system dissipates heat from the engine and transmission. The water pump cycles the coolant through the engine to absorb heat then returns the heated fluid to the radiator where the heat is then dissipated.
Some factors that affect the replacement of cooling system parts include:
- Driving habits
- Operating conditions
- Type of vehicle
- Type of coolant
- Frequency of regular maintenance such as coolant changes
What to look for to identify potential problems with your coolant system.
- Overheating
- Sweet smell
- Leaks
- Repeatedly needing to add fluid

Automotive AC systems seem like they could be complicated, to some they may be and to others, not so much. Typically, the air conditioning in your vehicle will not need much repair as long as the system has been properly serviced and maintained.
If your air is not working in your vehicle there are a few things you can do to narrow down what may be causing this issue. because it is a closed system, your ac should continue working unless there is a problem.
Check your car AC system for signs of needing repair
Is your car's ac seeming like it used to operate better and blow colder? You may have an issue needing to be addressed.
- First determine if your air conditioning blower is working. Turn the ac system on and turn adjust the dials to full blast. If there is air blowing out of your vents than your blower is working.
- You can attempt to visually inspect the ac lines and connections and look for any moisture with a grease type of appearance. If you see anything like that, it could very well be that the ac system has a leak and will need to be repaired.
- You can have your ac system checked for leaks as well. There is ac refrigerant with dye in it. You can have your ac system charged with this dye, drive for a few days while the air runs, the dye will be visible with special ac leak inspection glasses.
Differences in ac recharging services
There are two different methods often referred to as "recharging" your ac system. One method involves just adding refrigerant or "topping-off" the system. This as you can imagine, is simply adding the proper amount of refrigerant to your ac system. This is often effective for a short time unless you have a serious leak. This method is less expensive than the next and will give you cold air for a period of time. Keep in mind if your ac is in need of "topping-off" it usually means there is a leak somewhere in the system.
The next type is called "evacuation and recharge" this method involves completely emptying the ac system of refrigerant and adding new at the exact amount required by your vehicle manufacturer. This method although more expensive than a "top-off" will ensure the best possible performance of your ac system.
If you have found yourself in need of a recharge be sure to have a full leak test and inspection done to insure you don't waste any money. If the ac system is leaking, the leaks have to be repaired or you will end up topping-off or recharging your system more often and spending more money in the long run than having the leaks repaired and the system recharged.
In any event if you are in need of a quality, and honest, inspection and don't want to worry about potentially getting duped into a service you may not need.
